Blood Drive This Week!

Here’s a note from the Red Cross at Yale about their blood drive this week:

Since he was six, Matt has been shutting down opponents on the field – in Park Ridge house and traveling soccer, at Maine South High School and, most recently, at Yale University. Just a few weeks ago, while skiing with friends out in Colorado, he found himself facing a new and very unexpected opponent. He visited the Aspen ER suffering from a sinus infection and dehydration, and ended up being diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). Fast action by the ER staff and the doctors and nurses at the University of Colorado Hospital where he was flown, put him on a fast track to remission and enabled him to return home. Over the course of three weeks as an inpatient, Matt required dozens of units of red cells and platelets. Going forward, there will be three more rounds of chemotherapy that will require similarly large amounts of blood products to move him toward a complete recovery.

“I consider myself fairly independent and self-sufficient,” Matt (SY, ’08) says. “However, it is absolutely impossible to fight my current battle without the support of others – specifically, the generous and selfless individuals who donate blood and platelets on a regular or occasional basis – to benefit people they’ll never meet. I am encouraging friends, family and acquaintances from the Yale community to participate in the American Red Cross at Yale (ARCY) blood drive at Payne Whitney Gym, Tuesday, April 7, through Thursday, April 9 from 1-6:30PM. If my story helps increase donations at this event, it will be a start to repaying a great debt that I owe.”
